“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Who else could have said this but Apple CEO Steve Jobs? And I couldn’t agree more. Innovation, which has helped companies like Apple thrive, has now become critical for survival amidst the backdrop of a slowing economy. myPhotopipe.com Inc (MPPC.PK) also seems to be committed to exploring new ideas with the changing times. This commitment is what drove the company to transition from a traditional bricks-and-mortar film lab into a provider of online digital photo processing and related services around four years back. MPPC has a host ... Continue

This past weekend, I sat in a local coffee shop in the south of Thailand. As different from a Starbucks as it could possibly be, the shop itself was a simple structure with a tin roof and no walls, a handful of old plastic tables and chairs, and regular customers that have been coming every day, since before Siam was renamed Thailand. There were a couple loose chickens wandering around, and a stray dog sat down beside my table, hoping for a few scraps of my deep-fried turnip cake. An ancient Buddha statue looked over us from its place ... Continue

With the housing market still reeling from slow sales, dipping values and an across-the-board credit crunch, it's easy to see why many financial prognosticators continue to be pessimistic. Not only have mortgage companies been hit with devastating body blows, commercial banks have begun to stumble, as well. It's the general rule of thumb that banks are tightening their operations and drastically contracting their credit extensions in an effort to minimize losses. But not all banks are painting a doom-and-gloom picture. Security Business Bank (OTCBB: SBBK) has announced its unaudited 2008 first-quarter financial results, ... Continue

The fact that the price of oil hits a new high every week is no longer headline news. What is news is that high oil prices are making unconventional oil recovery worth the effort. The Department of Energy (DOE) reports that conventional domestic oil recovery only yields 10 percent of the oil deposit. Using secondary techniques such as injecting water or natural gas into the oil deposit can recover between 20 to 40 percent of the oil but still abandons 60 percent. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or unconventional oil recovery can recover up to 60 percent of the original oil ... Continue

The creativeness and ingenuity coming out of Florida’s bank of small businesses continue to impress. Innova Robotics and Automation (OTCBB:INRA) is one more example of progressive Florida based companies to twig my curiosity. In a period of economic downturn and negativity in the market, OTC micro caps are a great source of pleasant surprise. Of course it takes more than just good ideas to prosper. There must be solid management, sound fiscal policy, and the product must actually have utility in a market with clear potential. With their CoroWare mobile application integrator, the Fort Meyers based Innova has ... Continue

Tax credits generally do tend to do what they set out to do, and that is to encourage some activity or socially beneficial goal that would not otherwise take place. In the past, tax credits for alternative energy has gone a long way to encourage development of things like wind power and solar. A credit set to expire this year may get a new lease on life, with a bi-partisan bill designed to extend the business credit for another eight years. The Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act of 2008, introduced earlier this month in the Senate, also extends the ... Continue

As the popularity of the Internet has grown, so have the problem of piracy and the activity of hijackers. According to Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), film theft costs distributors, retailers and others $18 billion a year. MultiMedia Intelligence said in a report in January that applications that leverage content identification technologies, such as digital watermarking and fingerprinting, are growing rapidly and could surpass $500 million worldwide by 2012. Key applications include Internet and broadcast content monitoring, metadata association, copyright control, content protection and forensics, and interactive advertising. USA Video Interactive Corp (USVO: OTCBB) designs and markets technology for ... Continue

The limitless potential of solar power continues to keep the industry in the news and drive investor intrigue. Google is installing the largest private solar power system in the US. The Google initiative clearly defines the derived benefits of solar generated electric power. ... Continue

Last week I talked about the CTIA conference and the results of the recent FCC spectrum auction, which is destined to make some very big and lasting changes to the telecommunications industry. Besides giving bigger footprints to Verizon and AT&T, the auction brought in some small-timers as well, giving these businesses a leg up in this highly competitive business. But the most important change came from a company that didn’t win a single bid—Google, Inc. Google entered the auction with the express stated purpose of bidding on the “C” block of spectrum, and had pledged to ... Continue

The 2001 US Postal Service anthrax attacks were a huge scare we weren’t ready for in the new and unfamiliar territory of the post 9:11 era. Bio-terrorism suddenly became a very real concern to the security of all Americans. Combating these and other threats suddenly became a high priority government issue. For most Americans, the further we get from the memory, the sense of urgency declines, but for various government agencies now working out of the limelight, the search for solutions and lines of defense is a serious, ongoing endeavor. Primed and ready, Los Angeles based Universal ... Continue
